An Autumn Reset: Slowing Down and Reconnecting with Nature

There is something about autumn that invites us to pause.

The leaves begin to fall, the air feels different and the pace of the natural world starts to change. Yet many of us continue rushing through our days, carrying the same pressures and expectations, without giving ourselves a moment to adjust.

Recently, I took a little time outdoors, walking barefoot and feeling the ground beneath my feet. It was a simple experience, but it reminded me how easy it is to become disconnected from the world around us—and from ourselves.

What can we learn from autumn?

Nature doesn’t hold on to everything. Trees release their leaves and make space for a new season.

Perhaps we can take a moment to ask ourselves: what am I holding on to that I no longer need?

It might be a demanding routine, a habit that no longer serves us, or the feeling that we must always be doing more. An autumn reset doesn’t have to mean changing everything. It can begin with one small, meaningful choice.

A moment to ground yourself

Stepping outside, breathing in the cooler air and noticing the colours around us can offer a welcome pause from the noise of everyday life.

For me, walking barefoot is one way to slow down and pay attention to the present moment. You don’t need to walk barefoot to enjoy the experience: a gentle walk in comfortable shoes, a few minutes in the garden or simply standing beneath a tree can be just as valuable.

If you do choose to try walking barefoot, pick a safe, familiar surface and take care of your feet—especially if you have diabetes, reduced sensation or a foot injury.

Your simple autumn reset

Why not take ten minutes for yourself this week?

  1. Step outside somewhere you feel comfortable.

  2. Notice your surroundings: the light, the trees, the sounds and the air.

  3. Take a few slow breaths and let your shoulders soften.

  4. Ask yourself: What do I need more of this season? What could I let go of?

  5. Choose one small action you can carry into the week ahead.

It might be an earlier night, a nourishing meal, a walk with someone you enjoy spending time with, or a little space in your diary to simply be.

I’ve shared a short video reflecting on this experience and the invitation autumn gives us to slow down and reconnect.

As the season changes, give yourself permission to change pace too. Small moments of connection can become the starting point for looking after yourself with greater intention.

What will your autumn reset look like?
